Ganz selten bin ich meinem selbstdiagnostiziertem Mini-Messi-Syndrom dankbar. Denn nur deshalb hab ich beim Auspacken eine Foto-Postkarte wiedergefunden, die ich irgendwo unterwegs eingesteckt hab und sie im unergründlichen Chaos meines Rucksacks ihren Weg nach Deutschland gemacht hat. Jedenfalls hatte ich mit der Postkarte auch den Namen des Photographen, Ibarionex Perella, und konnte mir so mehr seiner Arbeiten anschauen.

Ibarionex war so nett selbst etwas zu sich, seiner Arbeit und meinen Lieblingsfotos aus Wally´s Barbershop zu erzählen.

1. lil bit about yourself

I am a photographer, writer and educator and have been using a camera since I was 8 years old. I am primarily a street and portrait photographer. I teach currently at the Art Center College of Design as well as online photo courses through BetterPhoto.com. My articles on photography have appeared in Outdoor Photographer, Digital Photo Pro and Shutterbug magazines. I am also the host and producer of The Candid Frame: A Photography podcast, which showcases interview with photographers from all over the world.

2. you and photography

I have been shooting so long, I can’t imagine a live without the use of the camera. I enjoy walking the streets with the camera, making intimate portraits of the people I meet as well as creating striking images of the apparent randomness around me. I also love teaching photography and encouraging people to discover new ways of seeing, particularly when it comes to light. One of my favorite courses at Better Photo, exclusively teaches the way I see and use light for making many of my images.

3. wally´s barbershop

This is a barbershop that is only a couple of blocks from my house. I’d always wanted to photograph it and finally walked in and asked permission to make some images. It was great fun and allowed me to use the approach I use on the street in a more intimate setting. I have a great affinity for the barbershop, having some very vivid memories from my childhood and I wanted to capture some of those important details in my photographs. I hope that these image convey the experience of being here and not merely documenting what the space and people look like.
